In honor of January being National Radon Action Month, AmeriSpec Omaha and Lincoln is offering radon tests for $50 in the Omaha-Council Bluffs and Lincoln metropolitan areas.
Radon is an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas produced by the natural breakdown of uranium in the ground. If it seeps into your home, it doesn’t cause symptoms like headaches or dizziness.
“Radon typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation,” according to AmeriSpec’s “Ask the Inspector” experts. “Your home can trap radon inside, where the concentrations can then build up.”
The only way to detect radon is through testing.
Nebraska ranks as one of the highest states in the nation for average radon content. More than half of radon tests in the state are above the action level of 4.0 pCi/L., according to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
It’s important to test your home before you buy it, and at intervals while you own it, to make sure it remains radon-free. Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
