Bellevue is the third-largest city in Nebraska, and was once the state capital. Its name is means “beautiful view” in French. It’s also the oldest city in the state.
Fort Crook, which evolved into Offutt Air Force Base, spurred Bellevue’s largest growth. Offutt became home to the Martin bomber plant during World War II. The Strategic Air Command headquarters relocated to Bellevue after the war. This spurred Bellevue’s growth, and the city’s population grew from 1,200 in 1940 to more than 50,000 today.
Offutt Air Force Base is the location of the 55th Wing, United States Strategic Command and the Air Force Weather Agency.
